"Mafia 2 both 'limited and defined' by realism" Says 2K Czech

Realism is a subtle but key gameplay mechanic in the Mafia series and one the developers of Mafia 2 believe to be important when it comes to the game's narrative experience.

Producer at 2K Czech Janek Kolar and international producer at 2K games Alex Cox said that by limiting the player in Mafia 2, they actually want to enhance the in-game experience:
"You don't need to have an open world to make that feeling of being lost in the woods with guys coming at you from behind and around you," said Cox,comparing Mafia 2 to Alan Wake rather than GTA.

"You don't need an open world to make that happen. That experience is more important than the ability to go to five or six different forests and do it at your own pace."

"The pacing of the experience, the delivery of the story, the fact that you're actually being guided down a choreographed cinematic route is more important than the freedom element," he continued.

Kolar added, "I would say that realism limits our game but also it defines our game," emphasising the story-telling angle of Mafia 2 over massively open gameplay.

"We want to encourage the player to behave realistically," Cox summarised.

Mafia 2 Releases On August 27th for the PC.
