"more than '$100 million' being spent on Star Craft 2" Says Activision

Game developers at Blizzard Entertainment have been putting the finishing touches on “Starcraft II,” a sequel to a science-fiction strategy game that was first released 12 years ago.

Although videogame sales are in a slump, expectations for “Starcraft II” are high. Blizzard’s parent company, Activision Blizzard (ATVI), has spent more than $100 million developing the computer-based game.

Analysts expect it will sell several million units globally this year, giving a profit boost to Activision’s bottom line.

“There is no shortage of consumers for ‘Starcraft’,” Activision Chief Executive Bobby Kotick said in an interview last month. “For a game that is more than 10 years old, there’s millions of people still playing it.”

Star Craft II : Wings Of Liberty Releases on July 27th exclusively for the PC.

"Schwarzenegger is a hypocrite" Says EA

You know it, I know it, everyone knows that Arnold "violent games are evil but please keep watching Terminator films" Schwarzenegger is a ridiculous hypocrite. Despite it being common knowledge, however, videogame industry members rarely call him on his bullsh*t in the terms that he deserves. Fortunately, Jeff Green has stepped in to take the slack.

"Here’s the thing, though. As bloody as this movie may be, it’s not actually illegal for a theater to sell a minor a ticket to this movie, nor is it illegal for a parent to let his or her kid in with them," said the EA.com editor-in-chief while talking about Arnold's latest movie appearance, The Expendables. "... So when you see young teenagers or little kids sitting with their parents at The Expendables next month for two hours of bloody carnage, this is why. It’s not illegal. And it’s not news.

"If Schwarzenegger really believed in the underlying message of the law with his name on it -- that it should be illegal to sell or rent material deemed excessively violent for kids -- then he should take the first step and make it illegal for kids to see The Expendables. Until then, this is all nothing but hypocrisy of the highest order."

Unfortunately, people like "The Governator" are allowed to be massive hypocrites because the majority of the population are too damn stupid to put two-and-two together. People are so compartmentalized when it comes to issues like this that the average pleb will see Arnold fighting the good fight against videogames and never stop to think about his blood-drenched movies. Chances are good that not even Arnold himself sees the hypocrisy. He wasn't elected for his brains.

"Fable II was rushed" says Molyneux

During a talk at the Develop Conference, Lionhead Studios boss and Fable creator Peter Molyneux candidly spoke about the second entry in the series, admitting it had "huge design flaws" and was obstructed by an astonishing amount of bugs during a rushed development.

"Fable II let's be honest about it, it has some terribly messy things about it," Molyneux said "Half of that, again being honest, was because we rushed at the end and we had this terrible phase where, the world looks this beautiful with this many game features, and then slowly transitioned into being less beautiful."

Molyeux also revealed that Fable 2 had over 67,000 bugs at one point in its development, making it the first game that was rated "super-black" by the Microsoft Test team. "No-one had been black before. They'd been red and orange and green. But we were super-black," Molyenux explained. "They said it's utterly impossible for anybody to come out as super-black. That's why we had to reduce down what we had. But, to be honest with you, there were also huge design flaws in Fable 2."

What those "huge design flaws" were, though, wasn't specified. But speaking at the conference, Molyneux also revealed that Fable 3's development is currently "very, very tough," with an amount of bugs that evidently is even surpassing Fable 2's. Because of the game's size and scope, "it's got more bugs, more active bugs, than any game that [Microsoft Game Studios] has ever had in its history -- and the team of over 100 people are working insanely long hours, and they're coming down. That's the way it is."

This isn't an issue exclusive to the Fable series, though, as Molyneux says it's a similar problem with development of big, triple-A games across the industry. "We're in the same position as many, many other developers; if you read the post mortems of Uncharted 2 or any game, they all say the same," Molyneux said. "We find our game so late on in the process, that it's very hard to pull it all together -- and that has to change."

We did'nt get the chance to play Fable II because of its 360 exclusitivity but this time we'll try it for sure.

Fable III's scheduled for a PC release sometime in October.

"All Roads" Fallout : New-Vegas Graphic Novel Announced.

As is becoming more and more common these days, Obsidian Entertainment’s upcoming will Fallout: New Vegas receive the ink and panel treatment by way of the newly announced graphic novel, “All Roads.”

The graphic novel, which was written by New Vegas creative director Chris Avellone and developed with the help of Dark Horse Comics, will serve as a prequel of sorts by revealing a number of events and character arcs that lead up to New Vegas ("All Roads," get it?). The book features cover art by artist Geof Darrow and Peter Doherty providing colors. Jean Diaz and Wllinton Alves are contributing art as well.

Bethesda plans to reveal plenty of more details about “All Roads” during next week’s Comic-Con 2010.

Cliffy B. Responds to Comments about Mark Rein

Gears of War main man Cliff Bleszinski has responded to a UK independent developer's claim that Epic vice president Mark Rein "is a jerk".

Yesterday Cliff Harris, who according to his blog "has worked from home for his own one man company – Positech Games, making quirky and original strategy and simulation games"called Mark Rein "a jerk" , for allegedly heckling him during a panel session at the Develop Conference in Brighton.

"And the topic then came up of how indies can respond directly to gamers on stuff like messageboards," Harris wrote.

"Basically I started making the point, and Mark [Morris, Introversion] was also agreeing about how someone can email you as an indie dev, and you can reply personally back to that potential customer, and hopefully, that way you have converted that guy to buying the game.

"At this point, there was this derisive snort from this guy in the front row, who said something to the effect of, 'One guy? Who cares, that's a waste of time'. He then started to lecture us on how that's a silly way to do it.

"I'm 95 per cent sure that all four of us on the panel thought 'what the f***?' as well as 'who is this guy?', compounded by Robin asking him if he worked in marketing.

"Anyway… it turned out this guy was Mark Rein from Epic, although he seemed to assume everyone within earshot knew exactly who he was, and why he must obviously be right. I got the impression he was there to laugh at the little guys, or to just inform us how we are all wrong.

"Interestingly, it seemed there was someone from Sports Interactive (one time indies, as I recall) there, who seemed more on the indie wavelength than Mark. It would have been cool to chat with him.

"So… I've given this a lot of thought, and weighed up the pros and cons of just putting this down to misinterpreting someone, and so on, and I have reached this conclusion.

"Mark Rein is a jerk."

A Game of Thrones: Genesis Announced

Cyanide Studios announced last year it had acquired the rights to turn George R.R. Martin’s beloved fantasy novels into a multiplatform game.

Today, Focus Home Interactive announced it’s to publish the game, which has been names A Game of Thrones: Genesis.

Along with the first two pieces of artwork for the game, a description was also provided and it sounds a bit like a strategy title:

“A Game of Thrones: Genesis” plunges you into the heart of the battles and intrigues between the Families that shaped the Kingdom of Westeros.

However, victory does not necessarily result from brute force. The innovative game mechanics provide players with numerous paths to success: will you opt for a military, economic or diplomatic approach? Trickery, treachery and deceit are widespread and you will constantly have to watch your back if you want to avoid a bitter defeat!

Peacefully or forcefully annex surrounding territories, besiege enemy castles, send spies to infiltrate behind enemy lines, assassinate trouble-making officers or capture them to ask for a ransom… When you play the game of thrones, you win or you die. There is no middle ground!”

Still no date or confirmed platforms, but at least this is something.

Stake in Ubisoft Sold by EA

EA is selling its stock in Ubisoft, six years after purchasing a hefty 14.8 percent stake in the publisher.

According to a Ubisoft spokesman, an unspecified stake in the French company was being liquidated by EA, but Reuters said the spokesman wouldn’t confirm if the entire stake was being sold.

“Electronic Arts was seen as a natural bidder for Ubisoft, though a lot of people had given up with this idea a long time ago,” said one Paris-based trader to Reuters.

“On the other hand, it may open the door to new investors who were not willing to enter Ubisoft and try to shake up things as Electronic Arts already owned 15 percent but was not doing anything with its stake,” he added.

However, a source close to Ubisoft told Reuters EA had “given investment bank UBS a mandate to sell the entire stake”, with Dow Jones reporting the entire stake has been sold, but it is unknown who purchased it.

“This is good news for Ubisoft which regains its independence, although Electronic Arts has always supported our strategy,” a Ubisoft spokesman told Dow Jones Newswires.

EA bought almost a 20 percent stake in Ubisoft back in 2004, causing the market to speculate whether it would eventually seek control of the company as a whole.

Ubisoft was forced by the purchase to step up its expansion efforts, insisting it had “the means to remain independent”.

In May of this year, Electronic Arts only owned 14.8 percent of Ubisoft, with Yves Guillemot’s founding family owning 11.3 percent and 20 percent voting rights.

Ubisoft shares were down by 1.3 percent at €6.88 during the opening bell

EA Maxis working on an Unnannounced online game

EA Maxis is currently seeking an experienced Development Director to lead the development of "an unannounced next-generation Online simulation game". The first thought that came to my mind was a MMO of some sort (maybe Spore Online or something like Cities XL?), but Superannuation speculates that a Facebook game could be a possibility, which might make more sense than a traditional MMO. I think it's safe to say that it will not be another Sims Online. /Gasp.

So what could it be ?

FIFA 11 'Creation Centre' revealed by EA Sports

EA SPORTS has unveiled a new feature called Creation Centre that will provide football fans with the tools to customise content in FIFA 11 on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in new ways. Players can craft their own football player and create the team of their dreams using a web-based application at www.easportsfootball.com. Create a player by choosing his appearance, accessories and attributes and then create an original team with a distinctive crest and kits, complete with home stadium.

Fans will be able to share their created players and teams with friends and download into their console to play online, in Tournaments and in Kick-Off matches in FIFA 11. In addition, fans can choose player attributes and manage their created team’s formations and tactics right from the web. Creation Centre will launch when FIFA 11 is available in stores on September 28th 2010, in North America and October 1st in Europe and Asia.

“Having the ability to customize content in FIFA 11 to the degree where you are creating players and teams, choosing player attributes and managing team tactics effortlessly from the web opens up a world of possibilities of original content that fans will be able to create,” said David Rutter, Producer of FIFA 11 on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. “Creation Centre will perfectly compliment the official league and team licenses that are the hallmark of the FIFA franchise.”

Also new this year in FIFA 11 is Custom Audio, which enables fans to assign chants for every team and league in the game. Fans can set their home club’s chants to play during player introductions, halftime, and after goals – even hearing their name echo in the stands of Old Trafford or San Siro with created chants for their Virtual Pro. Plus, fans now have the ability to play music from their hard drive in game.

.
Guess we'll have to see if this feature is available for the PC version also

FIFA 11 releases on September 28th for the PC.

Joss Stone gets the role of the Bond Girl in Bloodstone

Singer Joss Stone has revealed she plays "a posh version of Paris Hilton" in the new James Bond game, Blood Stone, due this autumn.

She'll be Bond girl Nicole Hilton, a socialite 'it girl' who works with diamonds. She found the role "kind of amazing". "It's a bit crazy to be a Bond girl," Stone said on a Activision press event.

Stone had a full body scan for the game. "It's mad," she recalled. "It took, like, all day."

The British (but you'd be forgiven for thinking American) singer has also written a song for the game in collaboration with David Stewart. It's called "I'll Take it All" and "it's awesome", according to Stone.

Blood Stone contains a mixture of third-person, cover-based shooting and vehicle pursuits. Vehicles, in this case, being cars and speedboats. Donlan was shown a car chase that required a target be rammed off the road, before cutting to a boat chase in Athens harbour with explosions galore.

The game also features a focus mode where time can be slowed to accommodate head shots.

Blood Stone will boast an entirely original story written by Bond screenwriter Bruce Feirstein. This follows 007 as he jets around the world in pursuit of a terrorist suicide group. There's a focus on the diamond trade, too. Settings include Athens, Istanbul, Monaco and Bangkok.

A release date is yet to be announced for it.

Capcom again Teases something...

Hey, remember when Capcom of Europe teased us about that big reveal only for it to turn out to be a rather lame Dead Rising 2 viral website.Well, it looks like they're at it again, but this time they promise us they plan on revealing a new game. With Street Fighter IV producer Yoshinori Ono making a big game announcement at Comic-Con, one can only wonder what it could be that Capcom's European branch has up their sleeve. Maybe they'll throw Bryan a bone and announce a new Breath of Fire?

Atomic's Breach Pushed into 2011

This morning, Atomic Games officially announced that it plans to delay Breach until January 2011. The PC shooter was supposed to arrive this summer, but the developer pushed it back due to shipping date issues. The extra time will let the company add a Hardcore mode and other pieces of content.

"While work on Breach is actually done, we did miss our small window with Microsoft to get it up on Xbox LIVE Arcade for Xbox 360 in late June as we had planned. Luckily there were features we had been thinking of adding to the title, and now we have the opportunity to do just that. Unlike with Six Days in Fallujah, which was delayed indefinitely when Konami pulled out, we are publishing Breachourselves, and it will be out in January," said Peter Tamte, President of Atomic Games."I've always said, we don't make simulations for the public and we don't make games for the government. However, we have come to realize there is a growing segment of the gaming population that wants to test these simulation systems out for themselves, which is why we're adding features, like a Hardcore mode, to Breach."

Well, Atomic Games said sometimeeback a few months that the PC version would release very close to the release of the 360 version.

Breach would be released sometime in 2011 for the PC.

Valve wants to know what you have installed in your PC

Developer, publisher and online giant Valve has long had an interest in your PC's hardware, with its series of surveys. Now, though, for the first time they're taking an interest in the software you've got installed on it.

The company revealed today that as part of an update to the Steam client users can select to allow Valve to scan not just the hardware on their PC (it's PC only at this stage), but the software as well. To do this, it'll comb through the Programs and Features control panel and list everything it finds.

"The new software component of our survey helps us understand what else our customers are using their PCs to do, and as a result, what features we can deliver or leverage to make Steam and our games better", Valve says in a statement. "PC users, developers and manufacturers will no doubt also find this information useful, so we plan to publish these results and trends over time. The first set of software survey results will be published among Steam stats at the end of the month."

For Clarification, its not mandatory but optional

Indie Developer Tells Mark Rein to "F**k Off !"

Even as Shafter Vs Kotic winds down, the games industry air is turning blue once again as Cliff Harris of Positech Games a rather unpleasant encounter with Epic's Mark Rein.

Harris and several other independent developers were giving a talk at the Develop Conference about 'microstudios' and the intrinsic value of being able to directly communicate with players in a small fanbase, one-on-one.

"At this point, there was this derisive snort from this guy in the front row, who said something to the effect of 'one guy? who cares, that's a waste of time' ... it turned out this guy was Mark Rein from Epic."

Harris takes exception to this attitude, saying: "He may laugh when me and Mark [Morris] discuss the pitiful money our companies make, and giggle at the fact that we reply to gamers on a one-on-one basis ... But fuck him."

"If Mark [Morris] from introversion suggests I'm doing it wrong, thats cool ... But Triple-A studio bosses trying to lecture me on how to communicate better with gamers? Fuck off."

Epic MegaGames was founded as a shareware company in 1991 by Tim Sweeney, who originally made games in his parents basement. Rein, perhaps, has forgotten this.

New 'borderlands' DLC teased

When Borderlands was launched it was a smash hit, with its new FPS/RPG elements. Then Gearbox set in motion the many DLC packs that kept the game alive for even longer. They set up a twitter account promoting the DLC for the game. After General Knoxx was released, it went dormant……. until today.

tap. tap. is this on? had to turn my tweetergramming machine back on. just got some new orders. (sent from the future.)

I would love to see more Borderlands DLC — The Armory gave Borderlands fans what they wanted. Tons of game play, higher level cap, and loads of new weapons. There is no official word whether this is true or not, but Gearbox stated that after General Knoxx, there could be more DLC.

Borderlands was released in October 2009 for the PC.

Pachter : "Activision needs to start charging for 'Call of Duty online'"

Michael Pachter thinks that people need to start paying for playing Call Of Duty Online,

“We think that the overall decline was due to a very large number of people playing multiplayer online games for free on PlayStation Network, and for an annual fee with unlimited game play on Xbox Live,” said Pachter.

“We estimate that a total of 12 million consumers are playing Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 for an average of 10 hours per week on the two platforms’ respective networks, and the continued enjoyment of this game (along with an estimated 6 million Halo online players, 3 million EA Sports players, and 5 million players playing other games, such as Battlefield, Red Dead Redemption, Left 4 Dead and Grand Theft Auto) has sucked the available time away from what otherwise would be spent playing newly purchased games.”

He added: “We see this as a continuing problem, and think that unless and until the publishers come up with a business model that appropriately captures the value created by the multiplayer experience, we are destined to see a migration of game playing away from packaged goods purchases and toward multiplayer online.

“We think that it is incumbent upon Activision, with the most popular multiplayer game, to take the first step to address monetization of multiplayer. It is too early to tell whether that will be a monthly subscription, tournament entry fees, microtransaction fees, or a combination of all three, but we expect to see the company take some action by year-end, when Call of Duty Black Ops launches.”

PEGI ratings delay into 2011 confirmed by VSC

The Video Standards Council has confirmed the proposed changes to the age ratings system for games in the UK will not be applied until April 1, 2011.

Delay in PEGI rating being legally enforceable has been blamed on the Digital Economy Act, which while passes, has not been “made effective”as of yet.

Here’s the official statement from the VSC

“The BBFC have approached the UK Government expressing concern that games rated PEGI 18 will be released in the UK without BBFC certification.

“The Digital Economy Act has been passed in the UK but has not yet been made effective. This means there is no change in the procedure for releasing games in the UK. If a game is rated PEGI 18 it must be submitted to the BBFC for a legal classification. This is irrespective of whether it contains exempt content as it reflects the voluntary agreement made by the games industry to avoid confusion over 18 rated games. Games must also be submitted to the BBFC if the contain any extraneous video which is not part of the game. This includes trailers.

“The Government has said the legislative change is likely to be implemented on April 1st 2011. The VSC is involved in the discussions regarding the implementation of the new legislation and will ensure that all coders are made aware of the changes to the procedure in good time to allow submissions to be adjusted. In the mean time please continue with your submissions in the same way that you have always done until the VCS advises differently.

“It is important to stress that no games must appear for sale in UK shops with aPEGI 18 logo prior to April 1st 2011.”

Developed through UbiWorkshop by illustrators Cameron Stewart and Karl Kerschl, the comic mini-series will be unveiled during a Comic Con panel on July 22.

The panel entitled “Assassin’s Creed: Behind and Beyond the Brotherhood”, will include details on the comic series as well as Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood.

“We always thought that the Assassin’s Creed universe would be perfect for transmedia initiatives like this new comic series,” said Mathieu Ferland, transmedia senior producer at Ubisoft Montreal in the press release.

“We are excited to have the fantastic and acclaimed artists Cameron Stewart and Karl Kerschl working on the project. Ubisoft is looking forward to showing Assassin’s Creed fans what these talented artists have been up to at next week’s Comic-Con panel.”

He added: “As with all arcade titles, irrespective of platform, you have to go through your submissions before they agree and approve a date.

Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light will ship sometime in September for the PC.

James Bond : Bloodstone Confirmed

Activision has confirmed the existence of Bizarre Creations’ James Bond: Blood Stone.

As rumoured earlier, the game is a mix of driving and action.

The news clarifies Gamepron’s overnight discovery of a post on an unofficial Eurythmics fan-site, of all places, outing the game.

David Pokress, Head of Marketing for Licensed Properties, Activision Publishing is quoted:

“James Bond 007: Blood Stone captures the cinematic intensity of a Bond film by immersing players in an intriguing conspiracy that will require them to think and act like James Bond.

In addition, the game will feature a diverse array of multi-player modes and debut strategic objective-based gameplay that will allow Xbox 360, PS3 and PC players to battle as teams of spies and mercenaries through authentic Bond locales.”

This was the title leaked by UK retailer HMV back in April.

The leak mentioned Bizarre as the developer and Activision as early last year.

The game is apparently centred on an “original Bond experience”.

There will be action outside of the car, however, with “lethal hand-to-hand combat, cover-based firefights and some impressively adrenaline-fuelled driving sequences,” and then some.

Multiplayer for 16 is also promised, although specifics weren’t dropped.

Daniel Craig and Judi Dench will return to their respective roles for the game as 007 and M, while singer Joss Stone will play the Bond Girl and drop vocals on the theme, which has been written by Eurythmics’ Dave Stewart.

Screenwriter for GoldenEye, The World is Not Enough and Tomorrow Never Dies, Bruce Feirstein, has been brought in to write the story.

PC is also the mentioned platform

Activision is holding a Bond-related press event in London today, maybe then we'll find out more later today, stay tuned.

Update : here's the trailer for it :

"Kotick has always been passionate about games” says Activision To Shafer

whether Activision chose to sweep the bulk of them under the rug or Kotick’s come to enjoy the new one he was so recently ripped, this much is apparently certain: Bobby Kotick does not hate videogames.

“Tim Schafer’s comment that Bobby Kotick ‘makes a big deal about not liking games’ just isn’t true. Bobby has always been passionate about games, and loves the video game industry,” Acti-Blizz senior VP of corporate communications Maryanne Lataif said in a statement to IndustryGamers.

“But as CEO of a company that makes games enjoyed by millions of people worldwide, the demands on his time now make it difficult to play games as often as he’d like to or as much as he once did. As Schafer himself notes, he has never actually met Bobby Kotick.”

"Cataclysm will help hold attention of long term WoW players" says WoW Lead world designer Cory Stockton

Lead world designer on World of Warcraft Cory Stockton has said that upcoming expansion Cataclysm will keep WoW players interested even if they’ve been playing for the last five years.

“I think what we’re doing now could hold a player whose done it from one to 60 five times, easily,” he said The experience is completely different.”

Stockton said the changes to races are extensive.

“We’ve been able to remove all those passive talents; the 5 percent crit, the 5 percent defence. You know – the ones that aren’t very exciting, they just give you a percentage. So we’ve been able to pull all of those out, and put them into the mastery system and replace those with ones that feel cooler.

“I feel like that, combined with the whole new game experience is going to really feel different. It’s not going to feel like just the world has changed, the way that you play your class all the way through will feel very different.

“I feel it’s going to be better for new players or new players that we might have lost at some point along the way – to feel more compelled to get all the way through.”

Stockton added: “And then players that have already done it multiple times, I would hope, will see the new race and class combinations. That to me is one of the bigger things that would draw people in.”

World of Warcraft : Cataclysm is scheduled for release sometime this year exclusively for the PC.

Tim Shafer backs down from his "Prick' remarks

Shafer retreates from his "Prick" remark for bobby Kotick,

Having called Activision CEO Bobby Kotick a "Total prick" yesterday, and no doubt witness the Activision's response, Double Fine boss Tim Schafer has now claimed the comment was an “accident.” Oh, Tim.

“That was an accident,” he told Eurogamer today, speaking at Develop in Brighton. “I was going to change the title of my talk to ‘how to give interviews and remember to check the microphone is off.’

“I need to keep my mouth shut,” he said. “It is shocking how you really burn bridges in the industry. You start your own company and you don’t have to work for that jerky boss any more. Not naming names.

“Then it’s like Empire Strikes Back – you walk in the room and, ‘Holy shit Darth Vader’s at the table.’ It’s such a small industry, you see the same people over and over again. No-one ever goes away.”

Schafer refused to elaborate on why he said what he said.

“I’m definitely not saying anything about Bobby,” he said. “After that Eurogamer thing I realised I’m a little nervous about what I want to say.”

Blacklight : Tango Down 2 Confirmed

Zombie Studios has said that that it’s currently working on Blacklight: Tango Down 2, despite the first game only released this week on PC.

No exact details were mentioned, but CEO Mark Long said that the game will feature improvements from the original, such as player-controlled “mech-like” vehicles and larger maps.

As for the original, other than bug fixes, there will be no DLC, according to Long.

Blacklight : Tango Down 2 is expected sometime in Summer 2011 for the PC.

Molyneux demos Fable III at Develop

Peter Molyneux took the stage at Develop this afternoon to demonstrate Fable III, and while chatting about the cast, he let slip the game contained more “unannounced Oscar-winning talent” than previously mentioned.

The Lionhead boss said during his talk players can expect more than just the previously announced actors for the game and over 47 hours of voiced dialogue.

Molyneux refused to provide any hints as to whom these actors were, but with Fable III’s October release fast approaching, Lionhead will probably keep its cards close for a bit longer.

Speaking of famous talent though, Molyneux mentioned in his talk that at one point, the player is in a cave with their butler, who is played by John Cleese in the game. He compared it to the Batcave from the Batman series, and mentioned – very tongue in cheek we might add – players can think of Cleese as Alfred if wished.

Considering the butler will chastise players verbally, this should not be too much of an imaginary stretch, however it sounds as if Cleese will be more akin to Basil from Faulty Towers than the fatherly Alfred.

In the game, players start out as a revolutionary, who is the son or daughter of the previous Hero from Fable II. While we’ve been told from the beginning that becoming King or Queen is the premise of the game, Molyneux provided a bit of detail on how to go about it during his Develop talk.

One of the first things players need to do in order to storm the castle and take out the evil King, is gather horses and finish off the quests leading up to your eventual coronation.

Every ten minutes, the player will be reminded by what they see around them, and the consequences of why they need to overthrow the King. Molyneux said this is to help players from getting distracted.

Once you have fulfilled all the prerequisites to overtake the throne, you can wear a chicken suit to your coronation, and then turn into “the type of bastard” who may want to have a reign worse than the King you overthrew.

That’s choice at work, right there.

With the visual screen replacing the experience bar, players will instead have to focus on the myriad of gates, where once opened, you progress a level until eventually becoming King.

Gaining experience from completing objectives allows the player to spend points on either opening the gates or on chests which contain different abilities. For example, chests can allow players to purchase houses, or give you the ability to use a bastard sword.

Of the three combat systems, spells have changed the most. While there’s still no visual presentation on screen, it’s all in world. You can hold magic as long as you want, and it’s not capped, so you can push the button and build the spell up as long as you want.

Molyneux said you can even “put the coffee cup on button for twelve hours, wake up in the morning and see what happens”. Burnt coffee, we reckon.

There are also a new feature called promises, which force the player to take promises from NPCs or in turn make promises on the way to becoming King.

You can, for an example, promise to build a school, promise to provide money to reinstate a library, and all other sorts of things in order to secure supporters during your overthrow of the kingdom.

However, like a real-life politician, once you are crowned King, you can go back on a promise or rub people’s faces in it. This will change the game world, depending on what you choose to do.

Hot ladies for the Hero

On a side note, players should be pleased to know the women in Fable III have changed a bit on the looks side compared to the previous game.

According to Molyneux, females will look less like “Russian shot putters”, and instead have “curves and soft bits”. This made Joe Anderson, who was sitting in on the talk for us, very pleased, apparently.

Molyneux said that once again, players will be able to marry and have children, and this time around same-sex relationships in the game will allow the couple to adopt.

Characters must also watch out for those dreaded social diseases as well, which definitely would put a damper on anyone’s libido be it real or virtual.

Fable III is slated for an October release for the PC.

Star Craft II Client now available for download

Those thinking of purchasing StarCraft II digitally can download an encrypted version of the game starting today

To get the client, head over to the Beta version of Battle.net’s web interface, log in with your Battle.net account, and click “services” to purchase the game digitally.

If you are planning to buy the game in boxed form, the download won’t do you any good, obviously.

Areanet details rangers and Pets for Guild Wars 2

ArenaNet has detailed the ranger and his loyal animal companion over on the official Guild Wars 2 site.

This “jack-of-all-trades” can lay traps, summon nature spirits, or barrage his foes from a distance. Awesome.

Weapons used by the ranger include a main and off hand weapon such as a sword, axe, or dagger, along with two-handed weapons like a longbow, shortbow, or greatsword.

Rangers can also charm pets, and have up to three pets at his beck and call, but only one pet can be active at any given time.

There are 12 different types of pets, including spiders, lizards, or sharks, along with more furry ones – with all including a subtypes that can influence the pets’ abilities.

Pets also have customization options, and can evolve up to 20 evolution levels with each one gaining automatic bonuses at different evolution levels and eventually unlocking up to four ability slots.

A beta can be excpected sometime this year.

It sounds like a neat character, and you can get more info on it through here.

Guild Wars 2 is scheduled for a 2011 release , exclusively for the PC.

PBS to air Video Games Live, Coming this Summer

US channel PBS has revealed that it is to air the Video Games Live concert performed back in April by the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra

Featuring music from different series like Mario, Zelda, Sonic, Halo, WoW, Castlevania, Guitar Hero, God of War and Final Fantasy, the Orchestra was accompanied by co-founder of the concert events, Tommy Tallarico.

Tallarico has composed music more than 250 games including Earthworm Jim, Treasures of the Deep, Messiah, MDK, Maximo, Pac-Man World, Prince of Persia, and Advent Rising.

A special taping of the New Orleans concert will air as a PBS special during its summer fund drive in July and August, and a companion DVD/Blu-ray and CD set will be made available in North America through PBS until November 1.

The CD features 16 musical performances, and the DVD/Blu-Ray includes more than three hours of bonus material, including additional and extended music segments, composer and game developer interviews, exclusive game trailers, “making the game” documentaries, behind-the-scenes footage and composer commentary.

“I’m hoping that this project will have a positive impact on the perception of video games by the non-gaming world,” said Tallarico.

“We created Video Games Live over eight years ago to prove to the world how culturally significant and artistic video games have become. The goal was to create a show for everyone whether they play games or not.

“The fact that all of the game publishers have come on board with this project to help our mission says a lot about the future of gaming and how much they believe in Video Games Live.”

The DVD/Blu-ray also contains interview bites with actress and game fan Jamie Lee Curtis, along with video game composers Jack Wall, Russell Brower, Christopher Tin and Gerard Marino.

The game music performed includes:

  • Castlevania
  • Chrono Cross
  • Civilization IV

“Big plans” for Mass Effect 2 DLC Says Bioware

Thought Overlord and Aegis was it? The war’s not over yet, Shepard.

BioWare co-founder Greg Zeschuk confirmed that BioWare still has “pretty big plans” for Mass Effect 2 DLC, despite having already released multiple scenario and weapons packs for the RPG.

“We still have more DLC in the plan for Mass 2,” he said, speaking to us at Develop in Brighton today. “The last ones were really well received. People were really, really impressed with the Overlord Pack, and the Kasumi one did really well too.

“It’s something we’re going to continue to do.”

Zeschuk said that things were probably going to slow down a little, but assured upcoming content would be substantial.

“It’s at the point where it’ll probably diminish a little bit, but there are still some pretty big plans for DLC,” he added.

“It’s doing really well. Overall it’s something we’ll definitely continue doing.”

As well as introducing content packs, such as Aegis earlier this month, BioWare has also released larger DLC involving gameplay like Overlord has clearly gone down well with fans.

The developer is now hard at work on Mass Effect 3, but assured earlier this year that the story between the second and third games would be told through DLC.

Mass Effect 2 was released in January for the PC.

Violent games are actually 'good for you' says a research firm

The tried and true tale of video game violence turning players into well-trained killing machines received an interesting wrinkle today. A Texas A&M study claims that violent games may actually reduce hostility, rather than increase it.

The study, conducted by Dr. Christopher J. Ferguson, gave 103 young adults a frustrating task to perform. Afterwards, they would be randomly selected to play no game, a non-violent game, a violent game as a hero, or a violent game as a villain. "The results suggest that violent games reduce depression and hostile feelings in players through mood management," said Dr. Ferguson.

"It probably won't come as a surprise to gamers that playing games may reduce stress, although others have been skeptical of this idea," he said. "This is the first study that explores this idea, however." Ferguson does note that the results are correlational, which means they aren't necessarily causal, and more research is needed for a certain conclusion. Dr. Ferguson also points out that this research could lead to video games being used in therapy, to help patients deal with their frustrations.

Keep in mind that the study was conducted among young adults, so it doesn't necessarily contradict earlier studies we've seen related to children playing violent games. While we shouldn't be too eager to take one study as a win, this is a good step in the right direction of dispelling some fears about video game violence.

"Consoles are the past !" Says the Bioware Co-Founder

Bioware co-founder Dr. Greg Zeschuk has claimed that studios need to branch away from console gaming and diversify their business model.

Speaking at a keynote presentation at the Develop Conference this morning, Zeschuk said that Bioware was looking to get involved in everything from Facebook games to triple A titles.
"The future isn't necessarily on console," Zeschuk said. "That's the past. It's going to be a strong thing going forward, but the future is in all of these new businesses that are starting up."

"We want to expand because, you look at what kids are playing on. Kids are playing on iPhones and iPads. The 3DS looks pretty amazing. All these platform options, we want to be touching on all those."

In fact Zeschuk went on to talk about how Bioware had already ventured out beyond traditional console mentioning Facebook apps and Mass Effect for the iPhone, "The team went back and made some more games that we never released that were way better. Large scale MMOs. Small scale MMOs."

Don't worry though, those of you who are suckers for a Triple A blockbuster won't be left wanting. Bioware ""is still going to do the giant stuff."

"We're going to continue to do triple-A console, but we're also going to be exploring pretty aggressively."

TERA Coming to Europe Via Frogster

Berlin-based Frogster Interactive is going to publish TERA, the Korean-developed action MMO, in Europe. A recent hit at E3, TERA was developed using Unreal Engine 3 and boasts of spectacular graphics, animations and effects while guaranteeing "a smooth and fluent game experience without any interruptions by loading times."
“TERA will set completely new standards”, commented Andreas Weidenhaupt, CEO of Frogster Online Gaming, upon the signing of the contract. “The licensing of this revolutionary online game world is one of the largest deals and milestones in Frogster’s corporate history”, agrees Christoph Gerlinger, CEO of the holding company Frogster Interactive Pictures AG.

Gang Seok Kim, the CEO Bluehole Studio Inc., added: “We are very glad that TERA is now making its official debut in Europe, as we firmly believe it is a critical region in the gaming industry. Bluehole sought out a partnership with Frogster because of their successful publishing ventures in Europe. Our biggest desire is to see European gamers enjoy and have fun with TERA, and we will make our best effort to that end.”

'Asylum' Announced by Argentina based Senscape interactive

Argentina-based Senscape Interactive has just released a trailer for a new horror adventure game still under development. It's called "Asylum" and well, you guessed it, it takes place in a scary old mental asylum.
Authored by Agustรญn Cordes, designer of the popular and award-winning Scratches, the project aims to provide a genuinely heart-stopping and menacing experience. “We have created something very special here,” said Agustรญn. “The decaying Hanwell institute seems to have a life of its own and was designed from the ground up after real blueprints of vintage asylums. It may be one of the largest virtual structures ever created for a game.”

The company has been releasing a series of viral YouTube videos to hype up the title and even created a fake website for the mental asylum. They have an interesting website, www.FaceTheHorror.com, where you can find all that.

we'll have to see if it makes to the PC.

Here's the trailer for it :

ESRB apologizes for email address leak to Blizzard fans

Earlier this week the Entertainment Software Ratings Board inadvertently exposed the email addresses of nearly 1,000 people in response to Blizzard 's fans upset, ironically, about the prospect of their real names being used as a requirement to sign into Blizzard's forums. The ESRB has now issued a formal apology to those people who got their email addresses caught in that mess.

According to WoW.com, the ESRB said the problem was, as expected, due to "an unfortunate error by one of our employees" and added that "it was never our intention to reveal this information and for that we are genuinely sorry." The ESRB said the organization is "doing everything we can to ensure it will not happen again in the future." We think that closes the case on this matter.

You can play games By Using Only Your Mind ?

This holiday season will be a fight for motion controllers as PlayStation launches PS Move and Microsoft launches Kinect. Both devices will have you throwing yourself around and burning calories in the process. But what if instead of focusing on movement, we simply had to focus our mind on what to do in game?

Jedi Mind - (Yes, Real company name) has been developing thought controlled technologies that allow users to interact with their PC’s and other devices through the power of the mind. The technology, as you can imagine, would be very beneficial to users with disabilities and are unable to use conventional methods. Today Jedi Mind announced their new gaming application “Master Mind.” “Master Mind” allows you to play your favorite PC games like World of Warcraft and Call of Duty with the power of thought.

The user wears a wireless headset that reads your brainwaves and sends those signals to a USB receiver in the computer that allow the user to make any movement or action that they can normally make with a keyboard.

The Jedi Mind website lists the software download at $99, but it is not clear exactly how much the hardware costs. The website fails to list any information about the headset and the price or latency with the product. This most likely will not be something you see competing with PS Move or Kinect anytime soon, but it may be something to keep an “open mind” about in the future. Until then, I will need to focus on my ADD – I could see some real issues for me in the future and having to concentrate.

Here are a couple of vids demonstrating it :

Sam Raimi to start filmed 'Oz' on June 2011, No WoW Movie in the Mix

The Production Weekly, a reputable site according to The Collider, has posted in Twitter something that has put the movie critic sites abuzz with speculation concerning the World of Warcraft film.

"Oz, The Great and Powerful" is scheduled to begin principle photography in June 2011.

This is the film that Sam Raimi said he wasn't to committed to when interviewed by The Collider a few weeks ago at the Saturn Awards.

In that interview, Sam Raimi had talked a lot about World of Warcraft, and looked like he was more enthusiastic about working on that project. However, he did mention he had loved the Oz script, and also said that he read a 40 pages treatment of the Warcraft film.

The Collider offers some speculative insight to justify why Oz has better chances than Warcraft in his production schedule.

Bottomline, and I have no magic 8 ball, the Warcraft film won't be on the big screen minimum until 2012 or beyond.

Will Legendary Pictures offer sneak peeks at any future BlizzCon? I hope so. We have seen Marvel fans get previews on possible actors, we have seen Captain America concept art, and photography, etc. Same with Ironman II and the Fantastic Four.

I would really love to see these types of pre-production and production thriller viral announcements and material come out of Legendary Pictures, and Blizzard Entertainment. That's what fans love to see. After all, Blizzard announces the games two or three years in advance and fills us in with teasers.

Natural Selection 2 alpha to be playable on July 26

Unknown Worlds, the developers of one of the most popular Half-Life mods Natural Selection finally set July 26 as the date for when their anticipated playable alpha build of Natural Selection 2 will be available for play.

Only those who have pre-ordered the special edition of Natural Selection 2 will have access to the download. Not only do you get access to play the alpha, but players will also receive exclusive all-black marine armor which will not be available after the date.

“We actively supported the original Natural Selection over a period of five years and 20 versions. We added 18 maps, new weapons, alien movement abilities and a new gameplay mode. Getting NS2 to a playable alpha state marks the beginning of a new journey for us – one that we intend to support just as much.”

“Instead of taking the big-company approach and not giving access to a game until it’s too late to make major changes, we wanted to give our fervent community early access so we can make the game the best it can be. We wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for our community and their support so it only seems right that we let them try NS2 at the earliest phase.”

There were over 12,000 special edition and regular edition pre-orders to date according to Unknown Worlds. If you haven’t already pre-ordered you can buy the NS2 standard edition for $19.95 and the special edition for $39.95 which in then Unknown Worlds will offer their eternal gratitude.

'Driver' Devs expected some story reaction to it

Ubisoft Reflections has said it anticipated the reaction to the plot of Driver: San Francisco when it was revealed at E3.

The game will see series protagonist Tanner fall into a coma, which will allow him to switch between cars around the city at will.

It was met with a mixed reception, which production marketing assistant Adam Lavis said was "pretty much" expected.

"You're announcing a cool game mechanic, which people want to understand - when it’s related to the story, you've got to question it," he said

"Well, it's not a million miles away from Assassin's Creed or whatever. 'So I'm an assassin but I'm a guy from modern times but I'm sitting in a machine?' It's not the end of what is to be said on this particular subject but in terms of how it relates to the story and what can be expected from the beginning of the plot to the end of the plot, we're quite happy to be saying this is what we're doing.

"To sort of just say, 'This is Shift, this is what you do, this is what it can do for you in the game' doesn't really do it justice at this stage. So we have to say bear in mind that it's part of the plot, but there is more on that subject to be released later."

He added: "It's nice to throw stuff like that out there and then have people talk about it. Some people say, 'I don't like it, because I don't understand it', and others [are] saying, 'Nah, I think it's cool', it's just nice to have people talk about it for a bit, and there's more stuff to come."

Driver : San Francisco which was Recently delayed, will now be released sometime in the 1st Quarter of 2011 for the PC.

Brazil's copyright law forbids using DRM to block fair use

A UN treaty called the WIPO Copyright Treaty requires countries to pass laws protecting "software locks" (also called DRM or TPM). Countries around the world have adopted the treaty in different ways: in the US, the Digital Millennium Copyright Act prohibits all circumvention of software locks, even when they don't protect copyright (for example, it would be illegal to for me to break the DRM on a Kindle to access my own novels, were they sold with Kindle DRM).

Brazil has just created the best-ever implementation of WCT. In Brazil's version of the law, you can break DRM without breaking the law, provided you're not also committing a copyright violation. And what's more, any rightsholder who adds a DRM that restricts things that are allowed by Brazilian copyright laws ("fair dealing" or "fair use") faces a fine.

It's a fine and balanced approach to copyright law: your software locks have the power of law where they act to uphold the law. When they take away rights the law gives, they are themselves illegal.

§1ยบ. The same sanction applies, without prejudice to other sanctions set forth by law, to whom, through whatever means:

a) hinders or prevents the uses allowed by arts. 46, 47 and 48 of this Act [which addresses limitations to copyright including fair dealing]; or

b) hinders or prevents the free use of works, broadcast transmissions and phonograms which have fallen into the public domain.

"Don't push devs on the crunch" Says Zeschuk

BioWare actively puts a cap on how many hours staff can work each week – just one of the numerous rules and guidelines the studio has in its fight against the toxic impact of crunch.

Speaking during a keynote session on the second day of the Develop Conference in Brighton, BioWare co-founder Greg Zeschuk admitted that the group – like what seems to be all developers – has wrestled with crunch.

”We’ve had tough times with it,” he said. “There have been timers where we’ve stumbled.”

He added that BioWare now has a list of rules and guidelines that the group has put in place to ensure that its developers won’t be deprived of quality of life.

”For example, if [our staff] have to work extra they get something in return,” he said, adding that there have been times when overworked staff have been asked to leave and rest up.

But Zeschuk, now the general manager at BioWare Austin, had one key piece of advice on how studios on tight deadlines can survive.

He said: ”The most fundamental thing you can do is trust the responsibility of a group and allow them to make their own decisions.”

The team is responsible to achieve its objectives, he said, and adding pressure on that is a pointless endeavour.

Well Done Bioware !...

"47 Hours of Voiced Dialogue" Confirmed for Fable III

The final game will include over 47 hours of voiced dialogue, which, according to Backer amounts to 460,000 words. Background characters won't repeat themselves either, with each of the 32 different types of AI able to spout around 2,000 different lines.

“the game will include over 47 hours of voiced dialogue”

The game has one of the most impressive videogame casts of all time - Backer revealed that star names such as John Cleese and Jonathan Ross are actually part of an 80-strong cast.

The Lionhead man also detailed how Peter Molyneux oversees "freestyle" sessions with actors during development to ensure key dramatic sequences are on track before voice recording and motion capture sessions.

Microsoft's 1st Published PC game in three years, Fable III is scheduled for a PC release sometime in October.
